Three Reasons Why You Should Start A Blog
Jan 26, 2023 · 5 min read
Starting a blog is one of the best things you can do for yourself in 2023. In today’s connected and ever evolving society, you need to establish an online presence if you want your work and ideas to be found. I really think the best way to start out is by buying a personal domain name in the form of [your_name_here].com and then begin posting anything and everything to your new blog. If you don’t like your name, use a nickname or change it up a little. It doesn’t matter how you start your website, as long as you get around to making one.
Having a blog on your personal website is one of those things that can only grow with time. Don’t be discouraged if nobody reads your posts. Keep writing and keep playing the game. Eventually you will amass a collection of notes, thoughts, and articles that one day people might find and connect to you with. Even if so much as one person finds an article useful, you’ve made the world better off.
Here are my top three reasons why you should start a blog in 2023.
Reason #1 – Build a name for yourself
Most of us would probably love to see our name at the top of Google searches. A personal blog is the perfect way to do that because it’s an easy way to carve out your own little space on the internet. A place for you to build a name for yourself and dump any creative thoughts or projects. Make it all free and open for the world to benefit from. Don’t worry if it will be read or not, give it time and people will seek you out. Over time you’ll build a strong following of like-minded, passionate individuals and gain a good reputation along the way.
Your reputation is perhaps the one thing more important that any degree from some elite university or any Fortune 500 internship. Use your blog to build a good name for yourself and strive to keep it clean.
💡 Use your blog to build a good reputation and following for yourself.
It doesn’t matter what you post, as long as you’re posting something someone might benefit from (and make sure you’re okay with someone like your mom seeing it). When I decide what to write about I try to answer one simple question, “Will what I’m about to post be helpful to at least one person in the world?” If the answer is yes, I go for it.
Think of your personal blog as a digital profile containing a collection of all your works/projects. Alternatively, you could think of it as a dynamic resume you’re constantly updating and adding to. The possibilities are really endless.
Reason #2 – Writing online makes you a better thinker
When you’re first starting out you want to focus on publishing content consistently, you don’t need to have the next groundbreaking idea, and you don’t even need to be original. Write about things that might be helpful to others, document your life journey, share your interests, take people behind the scenes and share your process. As you become a better writer and storyteller with practice, you will start to find more insightful things to write about.
If you’ve never written consistently before, now is a great time to start. Writing daily is life changing. It helps you articulate your emotions, think deeply about ideas, and it gives you a place to plan out new projects. I started writing daily in 2022 in a cheap journal I had laying around. At first, I thought I had nothing new to say, but writing daily has helped me organize my thoughts and develop new ideas. Now, I’m happy to be sharing those thoughts online on this blog!
📄 I don’t write a lot because I have so many good ideas, I have so many good ideas because I write a lot.
Reason #3 – Step outside your comfort zone
I had a lot of fears before starting my blog: What are people going to think of me? What if my friends or employer find this? I’m definitely going to get made fun of. There is nothing of value I could provide to the community. Nobody will care what I have to say. I can go on …
Putting yourself out there is scary, but the reality is most people aren’t going to notice what you’re doing online. There’s a phenomenon in psychology known as the “spotlight effect”, which basically says we tend to overestimate how much people notice what we do. Starting a blog does not mean everybody is suddenly going to come flooding to your comment section criticizing or praising you. That’s just not the reality.
Don’t worry about being perfect when publishing something either. You might have heard the quote, “perfect is the enemy of good,” often attributed to Voltaire. If you wait for inspiration for the perfect article, you’re likely to get nowhere. You can write about literally anything (for example, write about your top three reasons why you should start a blog 😄). So just go for it! Face your fears and see what comes out of it, I am confident you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
